Want to help people in your community? Do you have a basic understanding of income tax? Volunteer with a community organization to help people by doing their taxes! This year, organizations are hosting free in-person and virtual tax clinics. As a volunteer, you can choose to file and complete taxes in person or virtually by videoconference, by phone, or through a drop-off clinic.

With the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), you'll be helping thousands of people get their entitled benefits and credits. As a CVITP volunteer, you'll receive training, guidance, access to a dedicated help line, and free tax software.

Become a participating organization

Make a difference in your community: register your organization to host free tax clinics. This year, you can choose to host in-person or virtual clinics. Your volunteers can complete taxes in person or virtually by videoconference, by phone, or through a drop-off clinic.

The CRA will provide volunteers with guidance, training, access to a dedicated help line, free tax software, and promotional products. If you're interested in registering your organization as a host, you can apply for a grant to help offset some of your costs.

Steps for volunteering at a free tax clinic

Through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), you can join thousands of volunteers across Canada who help people in need do their taxes. Free tax clinics can make a big difference in the lives of those with modest incomes by helping them access their benefits and tax credits. This is money they rely on to make rent, pay for childcare or buy food for their families.

You can volunteer in person or virtually. For virtual clinics, it helps if you have some CVITP experience, are comfortable working on your own, and are approved to use “Auto-fill my return,” which is an online service of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

This checklist provides an overview of the steps for volunteering at a free tax clinic. You will find full instructions in the training and support materials that the CRA gives to CVITP volunteers and host organizations.

Checklist

Register as a volunteer
- 1. Go to canada.ca/taxes-volunteer to register as a volunteer. We recommend that you register between the end of October and the start of February.
- 2. Choose a volunteer role: you can provide support, be a tax preparer or do both.
- 3. Identify the volunteer requirements for your role:
  - For a support role, the requirements depend on whether you will see taxpayer information
  - For a tax preparer role, the requirements depend on how you will prepare and file returns (in person, virtual or both)
Complete the volunteer requirements
- 4. Affiliate with a CVITP community organization (this is required for volunteering). CRA coordinators can help match you with an organization.
- 5. Depending on your role, you may need to:
  - get a RepID on the CRA’s Represent a Client portal
  - apply for a CVITP EFILE account or renew your account
  - provide a valid police record check (obtained within the last three years)
- 6. If you volunteer at a virtual clinic, you may also need an email address and access to:
  - the Internet
  - video conferencing software (you may have to download an app)
  - a phone
Take training
- 7. Take free training offered by the CRA.
Install software
- 8. If you are going to be a tax preparer, install the current version of UFile CVITP tax software. To use the software, you will need to enter a software activation key, which the CRA makes available in mid-January.
Volunteer at a clinic
- 9. Ask taxpayer for identification.
- 10. Get the person’s authorization to do their taxes.
- 11. Keep information secure and confidential.
- 12. Use the CRA’s electronic services, including EFILE for electronic filers, and Auto-fill my return.
- 13. Enter the CVITP organization identification number (COIN) on each return that is filed using the UFile CVITP tax software.
- 14. Call the CVITP help line to ask questions about income tax, EFILE and the UFile software.

Register to host
- 1. Go to canada.ca/taxes-volunteerto register your organization.
  - After you register:
  - a CRA coordinator will provide details on your responsibilities and offer guidance, free tax software, training for volunteers, a dedicated phone line, and more
  - you will receive your registration approval letter with your CVITP organization identification number (COIN)
Plan your clinic
- 2. Choose a clinic type. Volunteers can prepare taxes by videoconference, by phone, in person or by using a drop-off and pick-up option.
- 3. Schedule your clinic dates. Most free tax clinics are in March and April, but you can host clinics at any time of year. UFile CVITP tax software is usually available mid-January, and most tax slips are issued by the end of February.
- 4. After you select the clinic dates, enter them into the clinic form on the CVIPT web site. You choose to make your clinic information available in our directory or keep it private.
Recruit and manage volunteers
- 5. Recruit volunteers through your organization, contacts or a CRA coordinator.
- 6. Get all volunteers to complete the annual CVITP volunteer registration.
- 7. Verify all volunteers meet the security requirements for their role, which can include
  - a police record check
  - a valid EFILE number
  - a RepID in the CRA’s Represent a Client portal
- 8. Encourage volunteers to take the free training offered by the CRA.
Manage and request resources
- 9. Request promotional material from your CRA coordinator
- 10. If your organization needs free laptops, request them through the CVITP computer donation program (quantities limited).
- 11. Use the CRA’s electronic services, including EFILE for electronic filers, and Auto-fill my return.
- 12. Volunteers who are filing tax returns should install the current version of UFile CVITP tax software. To use the software, they will need to enter a software activation key, which the CRA makes available mid-January.
- 13, Track your expenses, the number of returns filed at your clinic, and any other government funding you receive for tax clinics.
Host your clinic

Make sure your volunteers follow these steps:
- 14. Ask each person they are helping for identification.
- 15. Get the person’s authorization to do their taxes.
- 16. Keep information secure and confidential.
- 17. Use the CVITP help line for questions about income tax, EFILE and the UFile CVITP tax software.
- 18. Enter the COIN on each return that is filed using the UFile CVITP tax software.
