Wood Buffalo 2023 Arctic Winter Games

The Arctic Winter Games (AWG) represents one of the largest multisport cultural events in the circumpolar North, with approximately 1,900 participants. From January 29 to February 4, during the Wood Buffalo 2023 AWG, Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth will showcase unity, sport, culture, volunteerism, and teamwork.

Participants represent 5 Canadian jurisdictions (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Northern Alberta, Nunavut, and Nunavik), as well as Alaska (USA), Greenland, and the Sami region (Finland, Sweden and Norway).

The athletic competitions include modern sports alongside traditional Arctic sports and Dene games. The cultural component of the Games will present a two-night gala featuring performances from local and circumpolar youth, as well as a collaborative piece which participants will learn and rehearse together.

The Government of Canada is proud to be the largest single contributor to sport in Canada. Sport Canada is supporting the Arctic Winter Games with a contribution of up to $2.5 million.
